Program Title:               The Set Based Path

Speaker:                      Stan Chui of HGA Architets and Engineers

About the Speaker:

Stan’s background is design. His passion for innovation has led him to look outside architecture for more effective design and delivery methods.  He was Lead Designer on the Sutter Prototype Co-opetition, which profoundly increased throughput, while decreasing square footage, staffing, natural resource use and delivery time.  Stan is Chief Engineer of the California Prison Receivership Project, A $6 billion program centered on applying Lean Principles to design, delivery and operations of 10 thousand healthcare beds for the state of California.

Program Abstract:

Stan Chui will be discussing how using a set based path has improved design processes, for single and multiple project efficiency, by allowing several possible concepts to be developed further though design phases.  This process has drastically ruduced multiple cycles of test, detail and rework and created a growing library of developed options for re-use.

Lean Construction Institute Cascadia Chapter

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. To that end, the Cascadia chapter is a localized chapter serving the BC, WA, OR region.  LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
